Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are the TOK Exhibition and TOK Essay assessed, and how are points calculated?
  • TOK Exhibition (Internal Assessment): Worth 1/3 (33%) of your total TOK mark. You select 3 real-world objects and analyze them using 1 of the 35 prescribed prompts, scored out of 10 marks.
  • TOK Essay (External Assessment): Worth 2/3 (67%) of your total TOK mark. You write a 1,600-word essay on 1 of the 6 official prescribed titles released for your exam session, scored out of 10 marks.
  • Your total score out of 30 is converted into an official TOK Letter Grade (A to E).
  • Your TOK letter grade (A–E) and Extended Essay letter grade (A–E) intersect on the official IB Core Matrix to award up to 3 bonus points toward your maximum IB score of 45.
  • Critical Requirement: Achieving an E grade in either TOK or the EE results in an immediate failing condition, meaning you cannot receive the IB Diploma regardless of your overall point total.
  • Prescribed Title Deconstruction: Breaking down the prompt’s key terms, implicit assumptions, and required Areas of Knowledge (AOKs).
  • Balanced Argumentation: Training you to structure robust claims and counterclaims with high-level real-world examples (RWEs) rather than cliché or overly general anecdotes.
  • Epistemic Rigor: Ensuring every paragraph explicitly addresses core TOK concepts like truth, perspective, justification, culture, and objectivity.
  • Specificity over Genericity: Objects must be highly specific real-world items with personal or real-world context (e.g., a specific tweet, a photograph of your family heirloom, or a specific museum artifact rather than “a textbook” or “a laptop”).
  • Explicit Link to Prompt: Each object must clearly answer the chosen prompt from a distinct perspective, demonstrating how TOK concepts manifest in the world around us.
  • TOK Exhibition: Typically takes 2 to 3 targeted sessions to finalize object selection, map out the commentary justifications, and refine the 950-word write-up.
  • TOK Essay: Usually requires 4 to 5 structured sessions covering title selection & outline, AOK argument mapping, draft review, and final polish for flow and academic terminology.
